Famous Mysteries: The Taos Hum

Perhaps if you focus, isolate yourself in an area that is completely surrounded by nature, and stay completely silent you might hear a very faint yet abstract sound. As this sound is often described as the Taos Hum, or even nature's hum, this sound is still a mystery and to many believed to be a conspiracy. As the description of the sound by many is somewhat of a very low frequency sound similar to an idle machine engine. However, many scientists believe that this apparent sound is only heard by certain people, as its frequency is too low for many people. The hum apparently is more prominent during the night, and cannot be picked up by most microphones or audio technology due to its extremely low frequency, until in 2006, where Dr. Tom Moir was able to find its frequency which is just above 56 hertz. Even with the discovery of the hum, there is no actual definite explanation as to why the hum occurs or where it originates from.

However, the theory of the Earth's Hum is still a conspiracy due to many factors that have not been completely ruled out, such as Tinnitus, which is generated by your own body in correspondence to the nerve system. Other theories such as spontaneous otoacuoustic emissions, which is when people hear buzzing or ringing while in complete silence, and lastly the idea of colliding ocean waves, which product infrasonic humming noises when waves crash together on the ocean floor.
