The Scariest Places In The US

There are many places in the United States that people believe are haunted.

The Winchester house is believed to be one of the most haunted places in America. The house is currently a big tourist attraction located in San Jose, CA. In 1881, the widow of Oliver Winchester, Sarah Winchester believed she was surrounded by evil spirits of the people who had died from the Winchester rifle. Sarah Winchester sought help from a psychic which recommended her to add rooms and stairs to confuse the spirits so they can't track her. She continuously added rooms for forty years. She added about 100 bizarre rooms and staircases that led to ceilings and blocked off areas before her death in 1922. There have been reportings of unusual events such as footsteps and doorknobs moving by themselves, which people believe to be the spirit of Sarah Winchester.

Alcatraz located in San Francisco, CA is also believed to be haunted. Alcatraz is known to be one of the roughest federal penitentiaries in the nation. The history of Alcatraz began in 1850, where military prisoners were sent there to build the prison where they would be imprisoned. The first haunting was reported in the 1940s, where a prisoner was found screaming at night claiming that something in his cell was trying to kill him. He was then found strangled to death. Today, staff members and many visitors of Alcatraz still report seeing and hearing spirits. A house on King St. located in York, Pennsylvania is well-known for its scary atmosphere. Long ago, a family of four was brutally murdered in this house. Since then, every time someone moves in, that family haunted and kicked the new people out of the house. Although it is blocked off right now, there used to be footsteps emanating from the attic. Not only that, but the lights flashed on and off constantly, cabinets opened and closed, and the doors slammed automatically. There was also a report saying that a little boy was appearing in the rooms and disappears when someone talked to him. There is a bridge in Oxford, Alabama that is named Hell's Gate. This haunted bridge looks and feels very dreary and gloomy. The reason why it got its name Hell's Gate is that whenever someone stands in the middle of the bridge at night and turns around, the road behind that person looks like the fiery gates of Hell. Long ago, a young couple died on the bridge for no reason. After that incident, on a dark night, if someone stops on the bridge and turns off all the lights, the couple that died on the bridge gets into that person's car and leaves a wet spot on the seat.
