Famous Mysteries: The Mothman

It is described as ranging as high as seven feet tall, with glowing red beady eyes that pulsate as its peculiar and frightening shriek only adds to its already terrifying resume. The creature or cryptid is none other than the mysterious Mothman who had haunted West Virginia from November 12, 1966 to December 1967. As its first grand appearance was in front of two couples and a several family members near an abandoned WWII TNT factory, when they stopped the car due to an abnormally tall individual with red eyes and large wings standing there, in panic and distress they traveled on route 62 as the large man-creature chased them at apparently speeds over 100 MPH.

Although there were few sightings after this incident, they all happened in a relatively short span, as the last apparent sighting was in 1967 as many suspect that the fall of the Silver Bridge, marked the last time that the Mothman circulated the area. Many individuals have theories that the apparent Mothman is actually just a hoax or a parapsychological event. Another theory is that the Mothman is truly an unidentified bird, however this theory gets little recognition. The Mothman is quite a popular figure in modern society, having numerous comic books, novels, and folklore written after it. It has also appeared on the big screen, as it is generally depicted as a horrifying mystery phenomenon. Overall, the Mothman has no evidence of its existence but at the same time, there is no evidence that it does not exist.
