Scary Dreams

This is not a discussion about the hit song by Black Sabbath, rather this is a discussion about a fabricated yet very real life feeling event. Most of us, if not all of us have had the unfortunate event of having a scary dream, these dreams also known as nightmares, have no explanation for their occurrence. Scientists and dream analysts have attempted to understand the purpose of dreams and nightmares for quite a long time. With all of the technological breakthroughs and innovations being created at such a frequent pace, there is still no way of telling the purpose behind these frightening mind movies known as nightmares.

There are various superstitious beliefs as to why individuals have nightmares. These superstitions range from perspectives of culture, generation, and religious affiliation. For the most part, these nightmares are believed to have some sort of spiritual underlying meaning behind them, which is relevant to some issue that is present in your actual life. Others believe they are a sign in which your mind is attempting to fight off its darkest and most obscene images. However, there is hope; many individuals claim that having a dream catcher or eating almonds have all had tremendous effects on nightmares. Different cultures have a variety of ways to fight off nightmares. In Germany a way to prevent nightmares is stopping up the keyhole, putting one's shoes with the toes facing the door and then getting into the bed backwards. While this may seem like an odd practice, it must be remembered that superstition is not always rational. If you are particularly tormented by nightmares, maybe it's worth a try.

Apart from superstition, there are also some scientific explanations for why people have scary dreams. It has been noted that the most common ages to have scary dreams during childhood are 3-4 and 7-8. This is explained for by the fact that children of that age are often dealing with separation anxiety from their parents. Though the frequency of bad dreams in adults is usually quite lower than children, anxiety and stress are also said to be the main cause of scary dreams. If one has more stress in their life, there is a great chance that the amount of scary dreams they have will also increase. Being victim to added stresses, fears, and anxiety all lead to bad dreams, your mind may not be relaxed but rather tense perpetuating the nightmares.
